One early summer day in June of 2011, April was waking up and preparing for summer college PE class of bad minted. April was trying to catch up on some classes so she could graduate on time.
As she was preparing for her class, she received a call. This was a call that she had been waiting on. She looked down at her phone and saw that it was Pam calling. April answered the phone, “What’s up!?” She asked. Pam happily declared It was the call announcing that a baby horse had been born. And even better news was that the foal happened to be a flashy paint. All four of his legs were white with the white running up over his shoulders and back end. He was bay, a dark brown, around his barrel (center of his body). His mane, the hair on top of his neck, was black and white. All spring she had been rubbing the dam’s, Chic, belly hoping the baby was going to be a flashy paint. She quickly got off the phone and excitedly collected her items for school in case she was still going to make it to the class after visiting the foal.
She couldn’t contain her excitement. April grabbed the keys off of the hook by the back door and headed to her car. Times like these are when she was grateful for having a GTI Turbo hatchback. She may have gone a little over the speed limit heading to the barn that morning. She had a long drive ahead of her. The barn was about a 45-minute drive from her house. This particular morning was just absolutely perfect. There was a light breeze which is rare in Georgia during the summertime and the sun was already starting to shine. Perfect morning to welcome a new baby foal to the barn.
“He’s perfect”
April finally arrived at the barn and parked her car. She could see that everyone was already in the barn. As she was shutting the door, Pam came out and jokingly said “Took you long enough to get here!” Pam waved for April to come in and see the new baby foal. April walked with a spring in her step to the stall and just couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Everything she had hoped for in a foal was right in front of her. She whispered, “He’s perfect”. The baby foal was clumsy walking around his dam trying to nurse. April laughed “he’s having fun trying to figure out those legs of his”. She was falling in love with him even though he wasn’t hers, but how badly she wanted him to be hers. It was love at first sight. She thought to herself she could stay here all day just staring at him. But unfortunately, she had college classes to go to and had to get going. But not before she saw her horse Little Money who went by the barn name of “Money”. She walked out of the barn toward Money’s pasture. She couldn’t help think “maybe I should just skip classes today and enjoy this weather and do some riding” However, she pushed that thought out of her head. These were summer classes and skipping any classes would put her way behind because of how fast they moved with the shorter amount of time. April’s friend, Carol, had also promised to keep her updated with tons of baby photos. Chic was Carol’s favorite horse and she had been taking great care of Chic during the pregnancy.
Naming of King
In the horse world coming up with a horse’s name can be fun. Combining a little bit of the sire and the dams name with a touch of personality. This foal’s sires name is Brennas Dixie Kid. In April’s mind, she was thinking Brenna’s Dixie King, but she knew she could help brainstorm with ideas, but because he wasn’t hers she wouldn’t have the final say in his name. At some point, someone from the barn was calling the foal Waffles. April wasn’t particularly crazy about this name. Fortunately, the name was eventually settled on Brennas Dixie King or “King” for short.
At this point, there was thought that King was going to be the only foal born from this stallion because they had tried to breed him with several other mares at the barn in the past, but hadn’t been successful. In April’s mind, the name King was fitting for the only foal to be born by this stallion.
